Neither helps you decide.

Here is what the documents say, word for word, and where Villa Vicario sits inside them.

What the United States says

The current State Department advisory, issued May 29, 2026, places Mexico as a whole at Level 2 (Exercise increased caution) and the state of Sinaloa at Level 4 — Do Not Travel, “due to terrorism and crime.”

That is the headline. But the same document, a few paragraphs down, states what its own government employees are permitted to do:

“U.S. government employees may travel to Mazatlán by air or sea only. Travel is limited to the historic town center from Avenida Gutierrez Najera to the ocean. Travel along the coast (Malecon) from the historic center until Route 503 is permitted.”

Read that again. The same government that puts Sinaloa at Level 4 names the Historic Center as the area where it does allow its own people to go. Not a vague exception: a line drawn on a map, from Avenida Gutiérrez Nájera to the sea.

What Canada says

The Canadian advisory, which we checked on October 1, 2026, asks for a high degree of caution across Mexico, recommends avoiding non-essential travel to Sinaloa, and then lists the exceptions:

“Avoid non-essential travel to the following states due to high levels of violence and organized crime: Sinaloa, excluding the following areas, and only if accessed by air or sea: […] specific areas in and around the city of Mazatlán: Centro Histórico south of Avenida Gutiérrez Najera; the road connecting Centro Histórico to the airport; the main coastal roads from Centro Histórico to Playa Delfines, including Zona Cerritos and Zona Dorada (the Golden Zone).”

Two governments, two independent documents, the same boundary: Avenida Gutiérrez Nájera.

Where Villa Vicario is

Gral. Ángel Flores 308, Centro Histórico. South of Gutiérrez Nájera, inside the area named in both advisories.

We are not telling you Mazatlán is safe. We are telling you where the building stands and what the documents say about that exact point. The difference matters: the first is an opinion, the second you can verify in fifteen seconds.

What the advisories also say, and we will not hide

Canada is explicit: “Violent clashes occur regularly between rival armed groups in the state of Sinaloa, including in Culiacán and parts of Mazatlán located outside the main tourist zones.”

Outside the main tourist zones. That sentence is real and we are not going to soften it. Sinaloa has a problem and Mazatlán is in Sinaloa. What both governments say is that the problem is not evenly distributed, and that the strip where Villa Vicario stands is the one they themselves mark as passable.

What no advisory covers

The building has a concierge and is lived in year round. It is not a second-home tower that empties out in May: there are neighbours, there is movement, there are people who know who comes and goes. In a neighbourhood, that counts for more than any gatehouse.

And there is something you can only confirm by being here: Plazuela Machado with its tables out until midnight, the Ángela Peralta Theater with a show on, people walking. How safe a street feels is measured by how many people are on it at ten at night.

Check it yourself

Don’t take our word. Both advisories are public and linked below, along with the U.S. Embassy’s map. Search for “Sinaloa”, for “Mazatlán”, for “Gutiérrez Najera”. It takes fifteen minutes.

Then come walk the corner. We’ll schedule the visit at whatever hour you choose: if the doubt is about night, we’ll do it at night.

Book a private tour

Sources: U.S. Department of State, Mexico Travel Advisory, issued May 29, 2026.
